A set of three short poems by Bolaño, on journeys, love, and literature.

Much shorter than 176 pages - this is a bilingual edition, with the original Spanish on the left and the English on the right. Some of the poems are also very short, barely taking up 1/3rd of the page.

A mercurial little collection. My personal favorites (as if anybody cares about those) are the cinematic dreams in Prose from Autumn in Genoa and A Stroll Through Literature. Also the Neochileans is fine too. ( )

58. I dreamt that I began remembering my dreams again, but quite vividly, perhaps a little too much, as to frighten my eyes at first light while awakening. This awakening of dream states caused an acute split in personalities so divergent from ordinary life that reading was the only way to piece my yellowed realities back again. I lived in books like Tres, if for a brief moment that it offered a calming of the bowels and relief of allergies, in addition to calming my arguing selves into a cooperative siamese hand shake, and maybe a pat on the back. An agreement to not freak out from boredom. ( )

For all its surreal moments, Bolaño's bitter vision of life, like Charles Bukowski's, is rendered with a candid, unmagical realism that springs from painful experiences and a militant refusal to seek comfort in the familiar conventions of literary genre. For all readers of contemporary poetry.
