    かさねの色目―平安の配彩美 by 長崎 盛輝 (fishreviews)
fishreviews: Both books are references listing the colour arrangements of "kasane no irome" from the Heian royal court. Each book features some info which the other book lacks, although there is some overlap.

This volume is a complete, intensive, image-heavy reference on Heian fashion- dealing with the more common aspects, such as kasane no irome color schemes and brocade fabric patterns, but also showing via diagrams how to put the clothes on (including tutorials available nowhere online), how the clothes/accessories are traditionally produced, what Heian-era shoes looked like, variants of junihitoe and karaginu styles... the works. If you can only afford one Heian-era reference book, make it this one! (If you can afford two, the second should be the "The World of the Shining Prince", which focuses as much on culture as this book does on costumes and textiles.) ( )

Book description
A book detailing Heian era Japanese court costumes, with illustrations of the different types, components, color schemes and brocade patterns. The most complete reference available in print on the topic. Text is in Japanese, but the illustrations are so plentiful that a non-Japanese-speaking costume enthusiast will still find this an invaluable reference.

And want to know how they dressed?
