Levin learned the name and deeds of Hannibal at school and in his fifties followed the path of his army (with elephants) through southern France to the Italian border. This is the book of the TV series made about Levin's trek and is worth reading for his wit and perseverance as well as his observations on the destruction wrought by tourism. ( )
