Homer is called a pest by his sisters and numerous animals because of their difficulties communicating. Early readers will enjoy this humorous story and will also be exposed to some of the confusion that can come through language when people do not explain things fully. Homer is likable character, who goes around with a large hat covering his eyes. Children who have older siblings who don't allow them to play with them will sympathize with Homer. The plot is about the confusion over language and whether Homer really is a pest. The setting is vague and is of the outdoors. There are not a lot of themes to the story. It is mostly about language and being an annoyance. Since this is an easy reader, the words are very big. There are lots of questions because of the confusion. Readers may enjoy watching Who's on First after reading this book. The illustrations are in color and are realistic and a little sketchy. Recommended. ( )
