I added this to my book discussion shelf because reading a selection of it for the opening of a discussion group could be more than fun or the book itself could be a great alternative to the heavy angst novels that usually populate book discussion groups. I also think starting out a book discussion with a poem is a good idea too.

Decided to go for something short and funny after all my heavy reading. This satisfies on all counts. Nice drawings. I'm impressed. ( )

Heard on NPR. Must read!

Very fun. Read it in a day - it's small chapters about various things - a short story here, a list of funny thoughts there... fun to carry in your purse and pull out when bored. Several laugh out loud moments, and pretty enjoyable overall. ( )

I've been a fan of Demetri Martin's stand up for a long time and I love his humor. That being said, I did not love this book. Of course, it had its moments--moments when I bust a gut laughing out loud--but it also has long, boring, unfunny moments. ( )

Fun. Never watched his show, but figured that I could try his book. At times completely amused, but there was also some shoulder shrugging going on. But, for the most part, you can consider me pink with amusement. ( )

Ultimately, This Is A Book is far more effective as a demonstration of the difficulties of translating comedy to the page than it is as a book. It’s eminently readable, but Martin’s humor is best dealt with in smaller doses, and the longer fiction pieces seem like jokes stretched well beyond their limits. There are probably ways for Martin to apply his mannerisms to the page successfully, but This Is A Book’s humble title serves as an unfortunately accurate description of this attempt.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0446539708, Hardcover)

From the renowned comedian, creator, star and executive producer/multiple title-holder of Comedy Central's Important Things with Demetri Martin comes a bold, original, and rectangular kind of humor book.

Demetri's first literary foray features longer-form essays and conceptual pieces (such as Protagonists' Hospital, a melodrama about the clinic doctors who treat only the flesh wounds and minor head scratches of Hollywood action heroes), as well as his trademark charts, doodles, drawings, one-liners, and lists (i.e., the world views of optimists, pessimists and contortionists), Martin's material is varied, but his unique voice and brilliant mind will keep readers in stitches from beginning to end.
