In this book, the monster Grendel attacks Hrothgar's great hall of Heorot every night. Beowolf comes to the aid of Hrothgar, and does battle first with Grendel and then with his mother.
The picture on the front cover is meant to show an Anglo-Saxon brooch shaped like a bird, but I don't think so. The 'wing' looks more like a leg with long claws for digging - so I think it looks more like a giant anteater!
This is a fun Penguin 60, which includes the most exciting parts of the Beowulf story, and should encourage its readers to go on to read the full story. ( )
