An unparalleled resource for Jews and curious non-Jews on the "traditional" way of doing things. That's going to be typical mainstream Eastern European and German tradition, by the by. But it's great. ( )

I'm currently reading a Swedish transl. of Donin's book. Please remember that this rabbi doesn't write for reform Jewish perspective. His polemics against reformed Judaism can be a bit annoying sometimes. However, this is a good introduction for newbies. ( )

This is a wonderful reference for those interested in returning to an observant Jewish lifestyle (Baal Teshuva), or someone considering a halachic Orthodox conversion. Rabbi Donin covers all the major topics and issues. Donin's 'To pray as a Jew" book, is a great book to use along side this one. ( )

A nice, cover-all-the-bases type book about Juadaism. It doesn't get into anything terribly deep, but it breaks down a lot of essentials, like what exactly you are and aren't supposed to do on the Sabbath, what Purim is, etc. I wanted a very basic introduction, and so I was very pleased with this. If Donin had gone into more detail, I think I would've been annoyed since he doesn't seem to be ok with things like inter-marriage and female rabbis and homosexuality. ( )

To Be a Jew, Rabbi Hayim Halevy Donin's classic guide to Jewish life, philosophy, and law has guided generations of Americans, Europeans, and Israelis to discover the treasures of their own religious traditions. First published in 1972, the book still stands as a reliable, practical and versatile resource for everyone from young girls preparing for bat mitzvah to old men returning to their spiritual roots. The book begins with an overview of Judaism's basic credo (including chapters on Israel's people, land, God, and Torah), moves on to describe the laws governing Jews' daily lives, the Jewish calendar, and "The Special Occasions of Life" from birth to death and mourning. One great strength of To Be a Jew is its blending of folk wisdom and scholarly learning. Rabbi Donin not only describes what right belief and righteous action look like but provides a rationale for these observances that engages and embraces the basic conditions of modern life. --Michael Joseph Gross
