This book comes with a half-circle cutout along the spine. As a consequence, when you open the book, each page spread has a giant circle in the middle. Tullet then creates images around the circle, incorporating it as a saucepot on a stovetop, a dinner plate on a set table, the center of a magnifying glass outdoors, etc. and asking children to imagine what would go in the empty space. At other times, the hole is a spot for children to add a three-dimensional shape, such as making a trunk for an elephant, another skyscraper in a city skyline, the teeth of a monster, etc. The high level of imagination needed to complete this interactive book makes it a good match for school-age children. Preschoolers may also be interested, but I would not recommend for children younger than that. It also seems like a best fit for a handful of children at a time, not for a large group setting like a classroom. ( )
