From the General Introduction
The purpose of the first volume in the Series is fourfold :
(1) To situate the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition within the broader sweep of the Church’s own Scriptural and Magisterial Theological Tradition;
(2) To identify some of the major themes in the Franciscan spiritual-theological vision of Catholic Christian life;
(3) To give an overview of our Tradition’s specific development and its major writers;
(4) To present readers with enough background in the categories in which our academic theological tradition was first articulated (i.e. the philosophy of Aristotle) so that they might be both somewhat attuned to the reading of the primary texts of the thirteenth century and somewhat prepared to translate the major themes into the philosophical, psychological and sociological categories of our own day. This first volume is thus foundational for those that will follow.
