Unoriginal and dull. ( )

This started off in familiar fantasy territory and I was looking forward to seeing where I was being taken. Unfortunately the pace slowed to a standstill and I soon found myself treading in mediocre treacle wishing for elsewhere. The problem with going slowly is that it gives the reader time to see the flaws and there are too many here to ignore. ( )

Immature fantasy in the spirit of George R. R. Martin. The story had some hints of something greater when it flashed to the Haig Blood's ruling body, and to the fanatical order of the Black Road which controls the Gyre Blood, but these passages are the minority in the book.

The book is dominated by a struggle between humans and elves (Kyrinin), with half-elves (na'kyrim) the only beings who can wield magic (the Shared) told from the point of view of a head strong 16 year old. I hate elves.

The book felt dominated by Orisian chapters, the Bloodheir to Lannis-Haig, a 16 year old headstrong boy. His chapters felt very Terry Goodkind with a healthy dose of deus ex machina, which made the book really drag.

Skip this book and continue waiting for Martin's 5th. ( )

Book description
For thirty years, the Glas Vally has lain unchallenged by the apocalyptic Black Road clans of the north. When Kanin nan Horin-Gyre decides to make another attempt on the valley, however, he is not alone. The volatile Inkallim and even the savage White-Owl Kyrinin accompany him. Behind the fragile link between these races sits one na’kyrim, a halfbreed, whose honeyed promises and enchanting tones conceal a lust for power. While the corrupt, indifferent Gryvan oc Haig pulls precious forces away from the Glas Valley to deal with the rebellious Dargannan-Haig blood, the lands of Lannis-Haig are uncomfortably vulnerable. For Orisian nan Lannis-Haig, nephew to the Thane, this will be the longest winter in history.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0316067695, Paperback)

An uneasy truce exists between the thanes of the True Bloods.

Now, as another winter approaches, the armies of the Black Road march south, from their exile beyond the Vale of Stones. For some, war will bring a swift and violent death. Others will not hear the clash of swords or see the corpses strewn over the fields. They instead will see an opportunity to advance their own ambitions. But all, soon, will fall under the shadow that is descending.

For, while the storm of battle rages, one man is following a path that will awaken a terrible power in him -- and his legacy will be written in blood.

"A gripping story that builds to a grim climax. No one who enjoys heroic fantasy should miss this."
--- The Times (London)

"An epic tale of revenge, betrayal and greed...an intriguing and imaginative story."
--- Dreamwatch
