Memoir, with kids and wildlife. A lot of it sounded familiar. George's voice is clear and amusing. ( )

I don't think I would recommend this book, I'm sure there must be a better nature book out there than this one. That said, this wasn't bad, just rather ho-hum. Most of the humour went over my 7yo's head and there were quite a few parts where he zoned out. But on the other hand there were some parts that we enjoyed, that were funny and interesting. The majority of the tales take place in New York state and since we live in the neighbouring province of Ontario the wildlife discussed is native here also. The 7yo is quite excited when he sees crows now, and calls out "Look Mum, there's Crowbar!" ( )

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0064462013, Paperback)

Jean Craighead George deserves to be ranked among the great children's writers of our time. Of her previous books, Julie of the Wolves won a Newbery Medal and My Side of the Mountain is one of the most thrilling and engaging books ever written for kids. The Tarantula in My Purse is a memoir of sorts, telling the tales of the various animals that have passed through George's house, from "The Screech Owl Who Liked Television" to "The Goose and the Duck Who Were Arrested for Disturbing the Peace."
