Earl's own book is certainly better, but "Scruggs Corner" is indispensable to anyone trying to learn the songs he played. There are certainly inaccuracies in the transcriptions, but Jack did these in the 70s and 80s, without the benefit of the slow-downer software we have available to us today, and frankly I've had fun going back to fix a few mistakes here and there because it forced me to listen hard to what Earl's really doing on these songs. The book would benefit greatly from being re-typeset. As it is, it's a plastic comb-bound collection of photocopies of the tab from Jack Hatfield's "Scruggs Corner" column from Banjo Newsletter. Such things are immensely time (and therefore money) consuming, though, so he can hardly be blamed for not getting around it it yet. At $30, it's priced high, given that you can find much more professional-looking books for far less (I would have charged $20 at most). But the content itself is invaluable and for the most part unavailable elsewhere, so it's worth gritting your teeth and shelling out the money. Jack's content (in this book as well as in others) has never failed to impress me ( ) no reviews | add a review
