"Dinosaur vs. The Library" is a comical book that has a weak, simple message and a loose, and sparse plot. The dinosaur roars constantly. Roaring, along with other animal sounds, comprises most of the dialogue of this story. The only enjoyable part of this book is the fact that the illustrations are strong enough to tell the story in an effective, consistent manner. The only thing that this book teaches readers is that there is a time and place for being loud. ( )

Dinosaur is a loud rambunctious young animal always looking to have contests to see who can be the loudest animal. He enjoys spending time at the library but on his way to the library he challenges those he meets to a roaring contest. Can anyone beat Dinosaur? We soon find out how hard it can be for Dinosaur to use inside voices and sit still during story time at the library. Most young children will understand the difficulties in using quiet voices and will relate to Dinosaur as he navigates story time. Text is written in such a way that loudness is portrayed with either big (loud) or small (quiet) words. Through the use of color changes as well as size of print, the author and illustrator portray how much fun Dinosaur has being loud and winning the roaring contests. The implementation of page breaks in anticipation of who Dinosaur will compete with next gives the book a sense of excitement. Ultimately we discover that Dinosaur has what it takes to play with his friends and listen to a story in the library using his quiet voice. A quick, fun read “Dinosaur vs. the Library” will appeal to young children, especially those who have read other books starring Dinosaur. It’s predictable text allows children to easily follow along and the bright illustrations will appeal to young listeners and readers. ( )
