It's well-drawn (in terms of both artwork and character development), engaging, and funny. ( )#77, 2004 My first graphic novel, sent to me as part of a bookring started by syrinxkat. I was skeptical about whether or not I'd like this format, but I loved it! Plus, it was a really quick read - it's amazing how many words can be left out when there are pictures to tell most of the story. I enjoyed the story - it claims to be about two women and a man who is a friend, although David didn't have too big a part in these, as they'd only just met him. I liked the characters, even if Katchoo *is* a bit in-your-face. ::grin::, and I got a kick out of the story. I'm also in such awe of the fellow who drew these. I'd love to have that sort of artistic talent, but, alas, my talents lie elsewhere. ::sigh:: There's only one thing I'm not particularly happy about . . . erm, I want to read MORE - I really want to find out what these three are going to get up to next! ::grin:: But my library doesn't have the next volume. And they didn't seem to have it at Borders when I looked earlier today, either. ::adds I Dream of You to wishlist:: I think I'll give The Sandman another try, too. I didn't realise these would be so much fun. Easily among the best graphic novels I have ever read. Terry Moore writes convincing, interesting and incredibly real women. While the characters draw you in, the story will capture you in the end. Most of the people I have lent this book to have picked up the series to read the rest of the story, even if they'd never read another comic before in their lives. An excellent example of how great a graphic novel can be when it steps outside the superhero genre. This was lent to me by a friend. It's not my favourite comic (as I do tend toward SF and fantasy, especially with graphic novels) but it was good fun and a nice light read after all the hard SF I've been on lately! [grin] I shall look forward to reading the second two volumes, which Jess also gave me... This is the first, and looking back, rather rough introduction to our three main characters and their quirks. An odd set of star-crossed lovers cross paths in this ongoing story. Katchoo, a woman with a dark past, loves Francine, who seems to always love the wrong guy, particularly a low-life, lust-crazed Freddie. Enter David, who can't take his eyes of Katchoo. When Katchoo decides to take matters with Freddie a bit too far, they all end up on a path that seems to quiet down but is only getting started. This trade is a bit looser in style than what follows, which tends down a darker road that, in my opinion makes for a better story. Strangers is a relationship comic with extreme elements and a dark underbelly. If that appeals to you, hop on board here and enjoy the ride. Recommended, though some may find the recurring themes a bit too recurring as the series progresses no reviews | add a review
Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 159497215X, Paperback)Strangers in Paradise is the story of three friends, Francine, Katchoo and David, and the people they fall in and out of love with. It's a tale of dark pasts and hopeful futures, double-crosses and true friendship, love and hate. In other words, it's a story of real life, kicked up a notch. His characters live and breathe so vividly that it shows how much he loves them and induces the reader to love them, too. Moore's artwork is consistently gorgeous--darkly cute, conveying emotion with subtle grace and a human touch. Strangers in Paradise is one soap opera no one should miss. --Booklist(retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:03 -0400) The first test round has been closed.
