The Book of the Dead was, to Egyptians of old, something like the Bible is to modern day fundamentalist Christians, the inference being that it was taken too literally in later times, while the real meanings behind some of its teachings had become so obscured by the mists of antiquity that that they bore no relationship or terms of reference to life in the later years.
