The first of the Johannes Cabal stories, and a great introduction to him. If you've never read any of the Johannes Cabal stories or books, start here. If you have, read this anyway because it's typical Johannes problem-solving (meaning: someone gets killed). As usual, it was frightening and funny in equal measure. ( )

The original short story that introduced Johannes Cabal, a "necromancer of some little infamy". Very snarky, very caustic, like I imagine Sherlock Holmes if he had taken up necromancy instead of the violin... :) ( )
