Sophie’s entrance into London society isn’t what she thought it would be: Mama isn’t there to guide her. Papa is buried in his work fighting Napoleon. And worst of all, the illness that left her with a limp, unable to dance at the Season's balls, also took away her magic. When the dashing Lord Woodbridge starts showing an interest in Sophie, she wants to believe it's genuine, but she can't be sure he's feeling anything more than pity.

Sophie's problems escalate when someone uses magic to attack Papa at the Whistons' ball and it soon becomes clear that all the members of the War Office are being targeted. Can Sophie regain her own powers, find her balance, make a match--and save England?

What attracted me to this book was definitely the cover. I thought the artwork on it was stunning and the title sounded nice. It seemed to combine 2 of my favorite things: classic England and magic. Overall the story was nicely written. I thought Sophie could be a bit whiny and tiresome at times but she changed that near the end of the novel. I won't be rushing to pick up any more books in this series however. For me, there was not enough magic. A lot of the story was about the romance. There was more to it than that but that's what I saw. It was a cute quick read however. If you have a weekend to spare and you like witches, warlocks, balls, and kisses, I recommend this book. 3.5/5! Lady Sophie walks with a limp after a bad illness two years ago that killed her mother and younger sister, and she is dreading her social debut. But she quickly finds a friend, and a charming, handsome suitor. But members of the War Office, including her father, have been stricken with magical accidents. Sophie's own powers, hidden for safety's sake, have almost deserted her; can she save the day without revealing that she is a witch?

Charming and fun. ( )
