She's fourteen. She's a student, a swimmer, and a best friend. But she'd like to be an adventurer and an outlaw. Phil teams up with his young, attractive assistant. This novel doesn't work as well as Adverbs. Handler's style seems more suited to the short form. ( )

Oh I really wanted to love this like I love most things written by Daniel Handler. A story of modern day pirates… kind of? Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes very bizarre. ( )

I loved it. Then I didn't. Then I did. ( )

There are two major storylines going on in this book. I found Gwen's story arc more interesting than Phil's. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Phil's parts in the book could have been omitted. He doesn't do anything. He just kind of wanders through the story in a daze. ( )
