The illustrations in this book are absolutely divine. Each image is so full of movement that is really appears like the figures are dancing. The illustrator was able to make each figure look three dimensional. The contrast and use of varying color is very impressive. Each page has a different beautiful poem about jazz music which adds so much to the book. I would suggest reading a poem a day to a child or classroom that way they can think about each one separately and understand the deeper meanings. This book could be used as a daily read a loud for more than two weeks teaching the children about poetry and jazz as a musical genre. ( )

This book is written in musical prose. It gives the reader the opportunity to sing along as its read, or simply read it as poetry. It goes over the history of jazz in America and some of the greatest jazz singers and artists that ever lived. The illustrations are beautifully done and give the book a beautiful symmetry. This book would be interesting to use in a music class or a history lesson when learning about different cultures and music styles in America. I would love to do a unit about different types of music and this would be a great book to introduce the subject.

Lyrical poems of jazz itself that paint so many visual pictures and plant nonexistent musical feelings into your being. The acrylic paintings that follow are equally beautiful and evoke suck emotions. ( )

Jazz was the first-ever winner of the Odyssey Award Through 15 poems that are read and sung we learn about the range of music forms that is a tribute to our American art.

"Jazz" is a collection book, with poems by Walter Dean Myers and illustrated by Christopher Myers. The interesting mix of poetry and jazz along with the art work helps to tell the rich music. Jazz is a form of music. Music is a form of expression. This expression is told through Walter Dean Myers' understanding of Jazz music and the culture. The whole collection had me reading in a taps and snaps along with, not words, but, scat sounds you would hear from someone singing over the music playing in the background. This continued with the clever use of scatting throughout the actual poems themselves. I don't know if this is a book that can be read to someone with little jazz in their soul, but I can say that anyone who has heard and enjoyed at least one jazz number will find themselves hearing trumpets and strings plucked while they read.
