This is the first of Anthony Burgess' "Portrait of the Artist" series, about Enderby - awkward, curmudgeony poet Enderby. Like many of Burgess' books, the plot takes a secondary position behind the style of the writing and the incredibly rich texture created by the settings and metaphors. Burgess is - not to sound like a cliché, but the description is apt - a Master Wordsmith.
