2787 The Warrior and the Priest: Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, by John Milton Cooper, Jr. (read 7 Oct 1995) This is a 1983 book by a University of Wisconsin history professor which studies the careers and viewpoints of both men in a very intelligent and discerning way. While Wilson made mistakes in the Versailles handling and afterwards, in general he was the more admirable of the two men. Roosevelt loved war and his run against Taft in 1912 was a sheer ego trip, since he knew the result would be victory for Wilson. This book has some aspects of a dual biography but is really a study. Cooper is a very clear and penetrating writer. He is very critical of both Colonel House and Secretary of State Lansing, saying they undercut Wilson's efforts in key instances. This book was a good one. ( )
