A small but beautifully illustrated book of sweets (okashi) that accompany the bowl of matcha served in Japanese tea ceremony. As is traditional, the book is read from "back" to "front", starting with the first month of the tea calendar (November) and working its way to the last (October). Seasonality is, as always, an essential feature of tea expression, thus the sweets usually depict natural features of the month in question: chrysanthemums for September, red maple leaves for November, irises for May, and so forth. The photographed sweets are displayed in appropriate containers - flat trays for higashi (dry sweets), graceful bowls or dishes for omogashi (moist sweets), etc. - thus the book is helpful in learning which containers are most complementary. Even if you don't read a word of Japanese, this book will inspire you. ( )
