wave without a shore includes Cherryh's complex aliens and the adversory. I wasn't totally convinced by Eric Flint's mother of demons but for a free ebook (on Baen) they are more alien than most. Even Donaldson's Amnion (gap series) are pretty alien.

Mother of Demons by Eric Flint has an alien species with multiple genders. Interesting story. Touching, if simple, philosophical ideas.

... the science in a significant way. I don't think the science in question has to be physics. As an example, I present Mother of Demons. It's hard sf that goes deep into sociology and biology for its story. It does not rely on high technology at all.
