Spanish version of "Lola's Fandango." Lola's father teaches her to dance flamenco as a birthday surprise for her mother. The accompanying CD is great to read along with, because music is such an important part of the story. I also liked the depiction of the family relationships - Lola longs to be as cool as her older sister, her mom is a bit mysterious about her dancing past. They feel like 3-dimensional characters, even in such a brief story. ( )

Well who wouldn't want to take flameco lessons after reading this? I really enjoyed the story and the illustrations. I love The Wise Fool with the same illustrator, so it was nice to see similar work for a very different story. Bonus! - a CD with music and the story narrated! ( )

Sweet story of a little girl who, envious of her big sister, finds something special to do for herself -- learn fandango like her mama. Very sweet in terms of the little girl relating to everyone in her family -- father-child time while he is teaching her to dance; sister interactions when Lola wistfully envies her big sister's hair, friends, abilities; and mother-child interactions in that Lola is emulating her mama. I recommend the audiorecording since you can really get the feel of the rhythms (1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12....). ( )
