What's most interesting about Treasure and Scavenger Hunts: How to Plan, Create, and Give Them! is that it doesn't give you a whole lot of ideas for treasure or scavenger hunts. Instead, it gives you tips for pretty much everything else -- how to invite people and create teams, how much time to allot, what to include in the instruction packets, how to write clues, what sorts of prizes and food to give out after the event, and even how to create rules that encourage safety. The author's humor is a little over-the-top at times, but it's clear he's planned many events (including internationally) and he knows what he's doing. One note: if you're a youth group leader, this title may not be all that helpful to you, as it deals mostly with adult hunts -- generally because adults can drive, and big-scale hunts need much more planning than one in your backyard. If this is your first time hosting a big hunt, you might need another book to generate ideas for themes, but if you've been participating and now want to run one, you could get by with just this as an outline.

Treasure and scavenger hunts aren't nuclear physics nor do they lead to the salvation of peoplekind, but done right they can be plenty of fun and create a joyous core of an unforgettable gathering that can lighten, for a few hours, the otherwise more ponderous problems facing us and our kin.
