The Plum Plum Pickers is kind of a forgotten classic of Chicano literature, although Raymond Barrio was Spanish American and not Chicano. The portrait of a group of migrant farmworkers in the late 1960s, the novel experiments with collage, stream of consciousness, narrative fragmentation, and other modernist techniques, not always successfully. Still, the central characters are drawn sympathetically and in full complexity, and it's interesting to see what Chicano literature looked like before the tropes of nationalism really set in in the early 1970s.
