An encyclopædic survey, this second edition runs almost 900 pages. I read it most of it on a long plane trip, and finished it much later. It is a collection of articles, but unlike many such, which are of uneven quality, all articles are good. I recommend beginning with chapters 12 through 15, then reading the rest of the book sequentially. Tiny misprints on pages 95 ("simple" should read "simply") and 291 (exclamation point should be italicized).

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0391041347, Paperback)

From classics and history to Jewish rabbinic narratives and the canonical and noncanonical gospels of earliest Christianity, the relevance of studying the novel of the later classical periods of Greek and Rome is widely endorsed. Ancient novels contain insights beyond literary theories and philosophical musings to new sources for understanding the popular culture of antiquity. This work surveys approaches to the ancient novel and wrestles with issues such as the development, transformation, and Christianization of the novel (Spirit-inspired versus inspired by the Muses).
