An investigation into the purpose of the Wisdom of Solomon and the influences of Hebraistic and Hellenistic thought patterns upon its author.

King argues his premises well: the book coming out of Alexandrian Egypt around the first century BCE, written by a Jewish author using excellent technique to persuade his fellow Jews to hold firm to the covenant and worldview of Judaism in the face of Hellenistic influence while being subtly influenced by many of the aspects of Hellenistic thinking himself.

King does well at showing the progression of development in the perspective on Wisdom from Job, Proverbs, Sirach, and then Pseudo-Solomon and the progressive personification to hypostatization of Wisdom over time. He does well at showing the points of connection between apocalyptic literature and Pseudo-Solomon and also the important role of sacred history in Israelite theology and outlook and its role in Wisdom of Solomon.

A well-researched and presented treatise, valuable for those interested in greater understanding of the sitz im leben and purpose of Wisdom of Solomon. ( )
