I have always loved this story ever since I was a little kid. I give it 4 stars, not because of the story, which is the same, but because of the illustrations. The illustrations in this story are very, very well done and helped to pull me into the story, something I think that it would do for young children as well. ( )

Mireille Levert won the 1993 Governor General's Award for illustration in children's literature for “Sleep Tight, Mrs. Ming”. Her other books include “Tiny Toes” (1995) and Rose by Night (1998).

Levert’s adaptation of “Little Red Riding Hood” is a calm version of the classic story. The simplicity in the language Levert uses allows younger readers to enjoy a story that might otherwise scare them. The simplistic but whimsical illustrations add to the simplicity in the text. Little Red Riding Hoods stout and plump figure brings the reader into a cartoon world that is safe and familiar. Granny’s cottage shaped tea pot is another example of the innocent nature of the book.

Levert takes this classic and makes it her own, but she manages to do this in a way that doesn’t make the story bad and unfamiliar to the reader. “Little Red Riding Hood” by Levert is an enjoyable read for all children. ( )
