Neither a complete biographical sketch of the three horsemen covered, nor a training manual, but a searching look into the world of high level professional riders; into what exactly draws talented and not-so-talented people to devote their lives to horses. Keith Taylor, Lendon Gray and Anne Kursinski are not names familiar to the average person, and even within the horse world they are probably only "famous" within certain circles. But all three have the drive and dedication, and more than that, the special spark of something that makes them willing and able to talk "pony." Menino explores and speculates on that connection for the thousands of horse lovers who will never sail with no apparent effort over huge in-outs, ride a third level dressage test, or medal at the Olympics. There is magic in horses, and Menino offers a compelling glimpse at what it takes to get to the top, where money, talent, health, guts, determination are necessary and bad luck is always lurking. ( )
