On August 2, 1993 Robby and Jan Deboer were forced to give up the little girl they had raised since she was a few days old. Jessica was "adopted" when she was less than a month old and taken from Iowa to Michigan to be raised by the DeBoers. When Jessica was a little over a month old the birth mother decided she wanted Jessica back. There were many problems with this case from the beginning. The birth mother was untruthful about who Jessica's father was. The case went all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court and eventually the DeBoers had to return Jessica to her birth parents at the age of 2 1/2. The DeBoers were very concerned with Jessica's rights and how taking her from the only family she had ever known would traumatize her. ( )
