DCI Charlie Priest is such an ordinary bloke that I found I had to keep reminding myself that he is a fictional character. He is so genuine and so real. The plot is true to life too because Charlie finds himself involved in not one but two major crimes and that is what policing is all about - prioritizing and juggling resources. First there is a missing girl and then there is someone going around killing priests and vicars. I really enjoy this new series (to me anyway), and am looking forward to reading more about Charlie and his foibles, as well as good-humoured outlook on life. He's not really as cynical as a lot of good cops are and that's a good thing. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0749083859, Paperback)

There’s nothing Detective Inspector Charlie Priest hates more than a case involving children. When Georgina, the eight-year-old daughter of local businessman Miles Dewhurst, goes missing, Charlie and his colleagues soon start to fear the worst. And Charlie’s suspicions are focussed on Dewhurst--is his performance as a desolate parent a little too pat? Meanwhile, these are dangerous times for clergymen. Three have died suddenly, and a picture of a Destroying Angel mushroom has been left beside the body of the most recent victim. It seems that something more than coincidence links the deaths--but why would a serial killer focus on men of the cloth? As he races against time to find Georgina, and discovers the first clue in the hunt for the Mushroom Man, Charlie Priest has another preoccupation--his tentative pursuit of bishop’s widow Annabelle. And Charlie’s courtship is about to take a dramatic turn--for he is more deeply embroiled in one of the cases than he realizes…

When Georgina, eight-year-old daughter of businessman Miles Dewhurst, is kidnapped, DI Charlie Priest and his colleagues at Heckley police station soon start to fear the worst. Dewhurst himself is devastated and willing to give up everything to raise the ransom that might be required, but Charlie is not convinced that Dewhurst is all that he seems. Meanwhile, these are dangerous times for clergymen. Two are found dead under suspicious circumstances and a third is murdered by a shotgun blast. The deaths are linked by a picture of a Destroying Angel mushroom left beside the body of the most recent victim, but why would a serial killer focus on men of the cloth? As he races against time to find Georgina, and happens upon the first real clue in the hunt for the Mushroom Man, events take a dramatic personal turn, for Charlie is more deeply embroiled in one of the cases than he realises.… (more)
