I think that this book is really great not just for kids but for anyone that has lost a pet. The book really shows that you can remember and enjoy all of the good times you had in life with them. The illustrations fit with the book nicely. They weren't too brightly colored and really fit the theme of the book. I really loved this story and I loved the ending.

Another touching dearly departed dog story. These authors need to read Gordon Korman's No More Dead Dogs. ( )

Beautiful illustrations. A sad dog book, as a warning. ( )

This is a very touching story. Sammy the hound dog is loved so much by his family. One day they discover a lump on his neck. Finding out that nothing can be done, the father tells the children that they need to love him even more because very soon he will be gone.
Yes, a tear jerker for me.
I really appreciate how the author showed me the reader how to get through the pain of loss by remembering the special things that made each day a happy one.

This is lovely story of a girl's relationship with her hounddog, Sammy, and the process she undergoes to accept his death. It follows all the wonderful things Sammy and her do together and shows what great companions pets can be to kids. She finally understands that now that Sammy has died he will not be coming back but she can always imagine his spirit in the places she used to spend time with him.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0763649279, Hardcover)

A deeply affecting tale of love, loss, and remembrance-- told in clear-eyed prose by a top journalist and illustrated by a renowned American painter.

Sammy, the best hound dog in the whole wide world, loves his girl and she loves him. When illness cuts Sammy's life short, the girl's family keeps his spirit alive by celebrating his love of chasing wind-blown bubbles, keeping loyal guard at night, and offering his velvety fur for endless pats and tummy scratches. Painter Jamie Wyeth's illustrations-- infused with his realist style and lifelong fondness for dogs-- radiate the joy and sadness of every tongue-licking, tail-wagging moment in this heartening and lovingly rendered story written by Pulitzer Prize-- winning journalist Barbara Walsh.
