Above Suspicion is set in the summer of 1939 in Europe just before the start of World War II. The story is about an English couple asked by English intelligence to verify the identity of an English spy master running an underground escape route in Europe. Ms. MacInnes develops strong characters both male and female. She paints a vivid background picture of prewar Europe using small details both physical and psychological of each city and its residents the couple visits. To all this she adds a touch of romance. Her knowledge of the spy-craft of the 1930's and early 1940's with its use of the "old boy network" and well educated amateurs is excellent. The suspense builds continuously as the English couple follow the escape route backwards to find the man at the end. ( )
