Book description
The centerpiece of the book is a diary that I kept when my wife and I worked with SNCC in the civil rights movement in 1966 in southwest GA. In order to put the book in perspective I have added personal information as to what caused a white Southerner like me to get involved in the first place. I contend it was my having had polio and I describe how that experience gave me compassion for others who were suffering. Also religion influenced my world view, having grown up in a tolerant, religious family. I also have described what was happening in the civil rights movement at each stage in my own life so the book also provides a capsule history of the civil rights movement.
