The 3rd novel written in America by the Dutch writer. The background is the 1953 catastrophe in the flooding of dikes in the Nederlands, Belgium, and Britain.

Jan and Adinda are adopted children of the Dutch clergyman. During a storm, they are sent to the church belfry. Bussy, the puppy, keeps them company. Also, Noisette, a kitten, Ko, a rabbit, and Prince, an obnoxious rooster.
