Fiona Kidman introduces us to 1946 (Kerekeri), New Zealand, where returned soldier Luke Freeman and his family find themselves uprooted to. It is very foreign soil to these Wellingtonians in more ways than one. The tropical summer environment and amoralistic lifestyle of their employers causes friction and unrest in a family struggling to adjust to the return of Luke. 11 year old daughter Emily is confronted with a corrupt adult world after leading a simple sheltered life with her mother and grandparents.
Fiona Kidman creates vivid, eccentric characters and had me googling the 'China Set', a group of old China hands, seeking to create an extension of their Eastern collections and experiences in a Western environment.
This is an original tale, exposing another interesting slice of New Zealand history. ( )
