The design of this book is truly excellent, with fun, playful illustrations pared with collage elements that make the story pop in a way the writing by itself would fail to do. In fact, normally I would take off a star for the writing being good, but not great, but the story is so interesting and the illustrations are dynamic. ( )

My kids love watching the parade, so it was fun to learn about how they came to be. Might be a little long for littles' attention span if they aren't into the parade.

I love learning something from a picture book. This is the story of how we got the Macy's Day Parade. It started with a young boy who loved puppets and making things move. Tony Sang worked with Marionettes for years. Mr. Macy wanted to create a window display and hired Tony. Then he decided to create a parade for his employees and Mr. Sang helped with that. You will need to read the book to see how a simple window display evolved into the Macy's Day Parade we have today. I loved this book. ( )

The mixed media used in this book took it from a decent biographical picture book into a stellar one instead. ( )

Book description
This is the story of Tony Sarg who started and began the great tradition of the balloons for the Macy Day Parade. I thought the illustrations were well done and in tune with the history of the subject. This is a non-fiction book, and if I were to use this in the class room a the high school level, I would use this in an art class studying the art; or I would use this in an English class on how to look for back ground clues before we began to study film. We would look at symbolism and meaning.
