A Mountain of Blintzes by Barbara Diamond Goldin (raizel)
raizel: Start with the more traditional Strudel, Strudel, Strudel and then see how A Mountain of Blintzes updates the story to the author's childhood and makes it one of the very few stories about Shavuot that I have found.

Chelm story about a couple who decide to save their money so they can make apple strudel. Unfortunately each relies on the other to contribute funds because their own needs are pressing. When they open the trunk meant to contain their savings and discover only the initial contribution, they argue, fall into the trunk, which rolls downhill into the market, and zaniness ensues. This ultimately results in yet another sign in Chelm---this one warning that teachers may not live uphill, own trunks with wheels, or eat apple strudel. More reasonable morals, of course, exist. The concept is reminiscent of the story about an eleventh man moving into town and no one showing up for the minyan the next day.

A few other Chelm stories are briefly given to give a feel for the place.

The same idea is also used by Barbara Diamond Goldin in A Mountain of Blintzes, A Shavuot story in which the couple has children who save the day. ( )
