Voici la suite de l'histoire de Joseph Bertha. Guéri de sa terrible maladie, le «Conscrit de 1813» est en congé «dans ses foyers» après la chute de l'Empereur. Il attend avec impatience du ministre de la Guerre de Louis XVIII la permission de se marier, qui finit par arriver. Mais la royauté restaurée déçoit tellement l'opinion, avec les émigrés de retour qui réclament tous leurs anciens privilèges et qui se comportent comme si la Révolution n'avait jamais eu lieu, que Napoléon revient de son exil de l'île d'Elbe, entraînant dans son sillage tous ses anciens soldats mis au rebut par le nouveau pouvoir et tous les patriotes autour du drapeau tricolore, qui voient en lui le Jacobin adversaire des Bourbons et du cléricalisme. Joseph Bertha est rappelé à son régiment et doit partir pour la campagne de Belgique où la France affronte une coalition de toute l'Europe. Survivant aux terribles combats (victoire de Ligny, désastre de Waterloo), il suit l'armée impériale qui tente d'empêcher l'invasion de la patrie jusque sous Paris. La seconde abdication de l'empereur le pousse à déserter et, en compagnie de quelques camarades, à revenir à pied au pays ou il mènera une vie paisible avec sa femme. ( )
