Barth stands before us as the greatest theologian of the twentieth century, yet the massive corpus of work which he left behind, the multi volume Church Dogmatics, can seem daunting and formidable to readers today. Fortunately his Dogmatics in Outline first published in English in 1949, contains in brilliantly concentrated form even in shorthand, the essential tenets of his thinking. Built around the assertions made in the Apostles Creed the book consists of a series of reflections on the foundation stones of Christian doctrine. Because Dogmatics in Outline derives from very particular circumstances namely the lectures Barth gave in war-shattered Germany in 1946, it has an urgency and a compassion which lend the text a powerful simplicity. Brief summary of Barth's theology, using the Apostolic Creed as a basis. If only all religious thought were this rational. ( )

As the author remarks, his book "smacks of a document of our time." As such, it is a courageous and effective piece of constructive apologetic and evangelism.

Whatever may be our personal attitude towards the [Barthian] movement, it represents a leading, if not dominant, trend in current Protestant theology, and as such needs to be understood by all teachers of religion. And no better or more authoritative summary of its teaching is to be found than that given us by Barth in his Dogmatics in Outline.

It is impossible to read these volcanic pages without being impressed by the fact that here is a prophet absolutely certain that the hidden God has revealed himself in His Son in the world of space and time in a manner which challenges men to the decisive venture of faith.

This volume will bring [readers] into contact with a razor-edged mind grappling fearlessly with the profoundest questions of the human spirit.

An excellent summary of and introduction to Barthian theology.
