Epigraph
From the surrounding plains of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro rises 19,340 feet to the roof of Africa. On the remote southwest side of the mountain there rises out of the dense green jungles a vast precipitous sweep of volcanic rock, laced by glistening tongues of ice, festooned with immense dangling icicles like giant Swords of Damocles. This, then, is the Breach Wall of Kilimanjaro.
Dedication
TO DAVE and all my friends who have died in the mountains
First words
