The fourth in Gunn's Sarah Burke mystery series, it's another okay book in the series, but not amazing.

The narrative starts during the crime which is a bit different, and so for the entire book we the reader already know who did it. And the tension in the story is a bit more thriller like, will he or won't he get away. And then there's Zeb and his subplot.

The reader doesn't see too much of Sarah's family stuff with Will, Aggie, and Denny, most likely because there was so much Burke family drama in the first three books. Honestly, it was mostly refreshing that the story was more about the mystery again instead of Sarah's home life.

On the other hand I thought that the Will/Sarah subplot at the end was going to be something different than it wound up being. But, that was a small thing. The bigger problem was also something that's hard to put into exact words. But, basically some parts of the book were-- off--. Perhaps it was the editing, or some of the dialogue, or something else entirely. The one thing I know is that it wasn't the characters. The characters are one of the best parts of all four of these Sarah Burke books.

It was a solid novel, interesting thriller/mystery, but not the best of the series. ( )

The new Sarah Burke mystery - Detective Sarah Burke is called to a mass shooting in a quiet residential street; it looks like a ‘home invasion’ gone very wrong. There are several dead bodies but the crime scene just doesn’t make sense – until one of the ‘dead’ victims suddenly escapes and another man is seen running from the house . . . Once again, as well as juggling her complicated home life, Sarah Burke is faced with a ballistics mystery to find out exactly what went down – and why.

"On a hot afternoon in Tuscon, Arizona, Detective Sarah Burke arrives at the scene of a mass shoot-out: a home invasion has gone badly wrong and five men are dead. Or so it first seems. In a bout of trickery to rival Houdini, 'dead' gang leader Robin Brady escapes. Zebulon Butts wasn't exactly sure what he was getting himself into when he agreed to be involved in Robin's latest 'job' to invade the stash house, but he sure as hell needed the money. Fleeing the scene as things get heavy and on the run from the police, help comes his way from an unexpected source. But as her team hunt down the surviving leads, Sarah Burke isn't the only one on Zebulon's tail..."--Jacket.… (more)
