«Quando patria, etnia, identità, lingua coincidono, allora abbiamo il sangue che scorre». È una delle icastiche affermazioni che l’autore fa mentre si addentra nelle pieghe del conflitto, dimensione fondamentale dell’esperienza umana, che si interseca con le tre parole del sottotitolo e che non va presa con accezione negativa. Conflitto non significa guerra, ma incontro tra differenze. Volta per volta l’esito dell’incontro può essere negativo, è certo, ma anche cooperativo. Morelli va a ritrovare nel De rerum natura di Lucrezio il senso di confligere: è quanto accade quando il seme incontrando l’humus si macera, si “perde”, ma è da qui che nasce una nuova pianta. Ma forse, caratteristico del nostro tempo è un terzo esito: l’indifferenza.
L’autore, docente universitario di Scienze della mente, che da sempre dedica la sua ricerca ai temi del conflitto, propone qui una sorta di summa del suo pensiero, il quale ha l’interesse di svelarci le dinamiche profonde del conflitto con un approccio pluridisciplinare, dai dati della neurologia alle scienze sociali, alla politica. Perché «il conflitto emerge e si afferma come codice della contemporaneità».
Meritano attenzione anche degli spunti quasi en passant come quello dedicato ai limiti del pacifismo (non per disaccordo con esso ma nel desiderio di renderlo efficace). «Perché la guerra assuma la concretezza e la pienezza così palesi e travolgenti rispetto al “vuoto emozionale” che la pace sembra indurre è una questione di ricerca di particolare rilievo».
