I read this book hoping to learn something about the Pueblo Indians, who I know next to nothing about. I did learn something from this book, but not as much as I hoped. My moderate rating for the book reflects my limited background in the subject matter rather than a fault in the book itself. The author discusses the major themes of Pueblo Indian mythology as reflected in the Hopi, Zuñi, and Keres traditions. Much of the mythology is apparently shared between these peoples, though the author points out many differences as well. The author's linking of religious themes and purposes to ancient Greek mythology was interesting, but again frequently went beyond my background in the subject. The author clearly respects the Pueblo traditions, and adds a chapter to the end of the book to discuss and defend Pueblo animism in the context of modern scholarship, particularly Paul Radin, Sigmund Freud, and Martin Buber.
I respect this book and learned from it, but I have to say that it would probably appeal more to someone with more background in comparative religion than I have. ( )
