As for Michael Ende, I like Momo even more than Die Unendliche Geschichte and definitely think they are literary enough to qualify. Faust would be high on my list. Also Die Leiden des jungen Werther.

Good reading!
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende and Inkheart by Cornelia Funke make a nice pairing. Both are German authors. Both feature youths who become involved in the books they discover. Ik heb net The book of lost things uit. Ik vond het een prachtig boek, het had wel wat weg van Het oneindige verhaal, alleen dan duisterder.

What I hate is losing the essence of the story, as was the case in movies like The Neverending Story and Belles on their Toes that I mentioned above. (#66) I agree. The Neverending Story film was awful. I had read the book to my little brother and was entranced by it; all those parts where Ende would say "but that's another story and shall be told another time" seemed to me to be great seed ideas for more books. I couldn't get enough of the thing. An ... The Neverending Story. Like Earthsea, the author hated what they did with his work so much that he asked to have his name removed from the credits.

Admittedly very ... The Neverending Story! I loved that book! Is it really 30 years old?! Oh boy...how I age! I love both Inkheart and The neverending story.
