The index comes first: a most logical decision to my mind, in that if you're interested, say, in saints associated with dogs, you merely look up "dog" and find that Saint Margaret of Cortona is pictured with a "dog at her feet, chequered habit." Turning to the more extended entry for S. Margaret of C., one finds that, while she was leading a dissolute life as a young woman, she was led to the site of her illicit lover's murdered corpse by a little dog, an experience that so shocked her that she renounced her wickedness and, after considerable evidence of contrition, was publicly forgiven by Christ nodding his head at her from a crucifix.
