Rouault takes the emerging trend in L2-acquisition studies of recognition of the importance of personal reflection or "learning narratives" and begins trying to systematize it, to apply categorical criteria to identifying its effects such as "self-efficacy", "motivation and goals", "autonomy", and "lifelong learning". These categories are derived from the psychology literature on learning and a re a bit stale, but Rouault is one of the first people in education to try to grapple with the topic in a systematic way, and as someone who is coming to the end of a master's degree and trying to decide what next out of a plethora of disparate options, I can testify to the importance of each of these to not only learning outcomes but the life choices we make in terms of what kind of learning and what outcomes to pursue.
