Mike Carlton has developed a lovely narrative of the history of this ship during her service in World War 2. The stories of the sailors are interesting and drawing from diary entries helps to feel more connected with those that served. Having said that, many of the stories of the crew delve in to speculation about their personalities.

I do have another major gripe or two about the book. Firstly it is obvious that Mike Carlton puts his spin on the politics of the day. He again creates speculative personal interactions between commanders and blames some of them for the disasters that sometimes occurred. One example of this is the ABDA fleet where Carlton says that it was contridictory orders that delayed the departure of Perth from Fremantle. As Hal Colbatch has illustrated this is clearly the result of a wharf strike.

So, a lovely story but not a brilliant history book. ( )
