This is the second volume of the definitive four-volume biography of Tchaikovsky. The main crisis to which the title refers is his disastrous brief marriage to Antonina Milyukova. This was an impulsive and ill-conceived decision on Tchaikovsky's part occasioned by his desire to have a "normal" family life combined with the need to quell rumors about his homosexuality. The major works of this period are analyzed in great detail, including the 3rd and 4th symphonies, Francesca da Rimini, Swan Lake, the violin concerto, and especially his operatic masterpiece Eugene Onegin.
